Browser emulation works by recreating the original Sega Mega Drive hardware in software. Our emulator is built on a high-accuracy WebAssembly core that replicates the platform's CPU, graphics processor, audio chip, and memory bus cycle-accurately. This means games run exactly as they did on original hardware — including the timing quirks many games relied upon.
Modern browsers can execute WebAssembly at near-native speeds, which makes it possible to emulate even demanding Sega Mega Drive titles without frame-rate drops. On most devices built after 2018, you can expect a locked 60 fps experience for the vast majority of titles in the library.
Audio emulation is one of the hardest problems in game preservation. Our core uses a combination of sample-accurate timing and a Web Audio API back-end to faithfully reproduce the unique sound of the Sega Mega Drive's audio hardware — from the punchy sound effects to the iconic music scores you remember.
While Wi-Fi works fine for loading games, a wired Ethernet connection ensures stable performance if you experience any lag. Most of the emulation happens locally, so network speed only affects initial load time.
